03-15-2021: Desktop Metal launched Desktop Health
The new company which acquired all of EnvisionTEC’s medical assets
On March 15, 2021, Desktop Metal announced the creation of a new business division—Desktop Health. This unit was built around the portfolio of medical-sector products developed by EnvisionTEC, which had been acquired in January 2021. Desktop Health was led by Michael Mazen Jafar, an experienced executive with nearly 20 years in the medical industry.
With the acquisition of EnvisionTEC, Desktop Metal’s portfolio expanded to include technologies such as Digital Light Processing (DLP), Continuous Digital Light Manufacturing (cDLM), and bioprinting. The latter was based on the 3D Bioplotter, a well-established bioprinting platform in the market.
Desktop Health was created both as a specialized unit focused exclusively on the medical sector and as a response to the growing demand for personalized healthcare solutions. It leveraged the synergy between Desktop Metal’s metal 3D printing technologies and EnvisionTEC’s polymer-based solutions. Additionally, the company aimed to expand beyond heavy industry and enter the lucrative medical sector.
Desktop Health integrated DLP and cDLM technologies, high-speed metal binder jetting—the core AM method developed by Desktop Metal—and the aforementioned 3D Bioplotter. The Bioplotter was recognized as the most widely published bioprinting platform in translational research, used in experiments related to bone, cartilage, and soft tissue regeneration.
Additionally, the new division gained access to a rich library of advanced, biocompatible materials, including polymers, ceramics, and metals, all tailored to medical applications.
The company was headquartered on the opposite side of the U.S. from Desktop Metal’s Boston base—in Newport Beach, California. This location was chosen to ensure proximity to key technology and medical hubs, facilitating collaboration with doctors and researchers.
In July 2024, Desktop Metal signed a merger agreement with Nano Dimension, which was also set to become the owner of Desktop Health. However, the merger has yet to be finalized, as the companies remain locked in a legal dispute over the matter…
