VoxelMatters has published another market report—this time dedicated to the use of AM in the aerospace industry.
According to the company, in 2023 the 3D printing market in this sector reached a value of $1.6 billion, with its dynamic growth driven by the extensive application of the technology in civil and military aviation, space, and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) sectors. Projections indicate that the market’s value will increase to $20.5 billion by 2033, with an average annual growth rate of 29.2%.
Metal components held the largest share of the market, representing 62% of the value ($978 million), a 29.1% increase compared to 2022. Polymer printing ranked second with a 36.9% share ($582 million), while technical ceramic AM, though only 1.1% of the market, grew by 42.1% to reach $17 million.
Civil aviation remains the largest adopter of AM technology, generating 22.9% of the total market, where metal components made up 13.2% of this value, and polymer parts 9.5%. Military aviation accounted for 20.3% of the market, largely due to metal printing applications (13.4%). The space sector generated 32.7% of the total AM market value, with civil and military space accounting for 19.5% and 13.2% of the overall market, respectively.
In metal printing, civil space applications were the most significant, contributing 68.4% of revenue in this segment ($211 million). Military aviation generated a similar amount, with metal printing representing 65.9% of this sector’s revenue. Polymer AM technologies were especially prominent in the civil UAV sector, where they accounted for 56.5% of the segment’s value, or $103 million.
In 2023, the AM adoption segment—which includes companies using 3D printing for internal part production—made up 45.5% of the market, reaching $718 million. Segments related to hardware, services, and materials represented 23.5% ($370 million), 22.5% ($355 million), and 8.5% ($134 million) of the market, respectively.
